I think Chong uses this poem to connect us with the proud heritage and roots of the country and the shape of the poem takes us back from the tall skyscraper shapes of the initial stanzas to a simpler and less developed Singapore. This is pure admiration and pride throughout. Furthermore, in the third stanza, the Chong communicates the strength of the country, which is now a major player in the world economy, by presenting an authoritative image of the Merlion. The image here is a powerful one, as not only is the Merlion portrayed to be mythical, it is at the same time true to its nature as half-fish, half-lion as it is clutching fish in its fists whilst adapting from using gills to using its lungs instead as it approaches land. This is probably exactly what the Singaporean tourist board would want us to imagine of Singapore and has no hint of regret or sadness that this speedy evolution of the city has left scars along the way see Kim Boey Cheng.

In the jungle, amid rasping branches, trees loosened their shadows to shroud you. While the fifth stanza describes the fully developed Singapore that is only distantly connected to its maritime roots by its ankles, the shape of the stanza pulls us back into its past with the lines becoming smaller than those of the preceding stanzas.
The poet cleverly uses the Merlion to symbolize the magnificence essau pride of her home country. Click through the tabs below to explore my analysis of different aspects of the poem.

Fourth stanza This stanza is about the way the Merlion facilitates the beginning of life on the land of Singapore. I think the poem is easier to understand without complicating it in this way because dssay mer-lion is a modern mythical creature created by the Singaporean tourist board.
